16 HRS AGO - After a week of turmoil off the field, the Reading players rewarded their loyal, and increasing vocal fans, with an entertaining thumping four goal victory over fellow strugglers Cambridge United. It was a dominant performance with some excellent passing football and outstanding finishing. Orchestrated by skipper Lewis Wing, the one-touch passing and movement allowed Reading to dominate possession restricting United to only two attempts on targets in the entire match. There was a confidence on the ball throughout the team and a willingness to receive a pass which enabled them to maintain pressure on the visitors for most of the game. Several Reading players have the composure, touch, and awareness to receive the ball in tight situations and pop the ball off to an unmarked team mate to retain possession. The quality of the play lifted the home fans which in turn encouraged the team to attack a team clearly low on confidence and ideas.

04/03/2024 - Reading climbed back up to sixteenth in the table with a hugely important away win at bottom club Carlisle United. With over 1,000 travelling fans making the long journey north, Reading secured three points to end the week positive on points after being deducted two points earlier in the week. After a set-back last weekend with a home defeat to Shrewsbury, this was a big win that puts Reading firmly on course to survive the drop to League Two. The Royals are back to being five points clear of the drop, and in good long term form, and look set to stay up provided matters off the pitch do not further interfere.
Reading got off to a good start, when Smith was set-up by the outstanding Knibbs, but Smith was denied by the Carlisle post. However after just 17 minutes Smith put Reading on their way. Knibbs doubled Reading's lead ten minutes before half time and scored a third just before the hour mark. The home side's goal on 71 minutes was little more than a consolation with Collapse

02/02/2024 - Reading saw Caylan Vickers and Taylan Harris depart on transfer deadline day, but there was a feeling of relief as Femi Azeez's expected transfer to Plymouth Argyle didn't go through. The Royals also managed to retain Knibbs, Smith and Wing who were also the subject of rumours about possible transfers away from Reading. Vickers and Harris joined McIntyre and Abbey as young Academy graduates moving on in the transfer window. With Guinness-Walker also moving to Stevenage on loan, the Royals are left with a much depleted squad, and lacking options in defence.
However there was one piece of rare bright news as Reading were able to bring in Arsenal Under 21 defender Zane Monlouis on loan for the rest of the season. Twenty year old Monlouis will come to Reading to play his first senior football after signing professional terms with Arsenal in 2022. He is not a stranger to the Select Car Leasing Stadium after playing for Arsenal U21s in their Football League Trophy match against Collapse

31/01/2024 - Tom McIntyre has followed Nelson Abbey out of the club as Reading continue to cut costs and try and secure immediate funds to pay wages of remaining staff. McIntyre leaves for a pitifully small transfer fee of just 75,000 pounds to Portsmouth who are currently top of the League One table. Despite McIntyre being a Reading fan, having being born in the town and coming through the youth system, the move makes so much sense for the player, giving him stability and a strong chance of Championship football next season. Twenty-five year old McIntyre first appeared for the first team in the 2018/2019 season, making two league appearances - both 1-1 draws in the Championship. The following season he clocked up 14 appearances in all competitions before becoming a first team regular the following season. McIntyre, always a popular player, will be missed and all Reading fans will wish him well with his new club.

18/01/2024 - Reading defender Tom Holmes has completed his move to Premier League Luton Town, but has immediately returned to the Royals on loan. The move means Reading get some much needed cash in the bank but retain Holmes' services - for this season at least. Holmes moves to Luton for what is believed to be a one million pound transfer fee. The fee is probably a reasonable deal for both clubs, with Luton getting 23 year old Holmes for a discounted price than what they might have paid another club, and Reading getting funds desperately need to fund wages which have been going unpaid.
It is disappointing to see Holmes officially off Reading's books after spending his entire youth career at the club and graduating from the Royals academy. Holmes has played 132 times for the first team after making his first appearance at the end of the 2017/2018 season - a 1-1 home draw against Bolton in the Championship. After a brief period out of the team, Holmes has been back as a regular player over Collapse

24/12/2023 - After thirty-four minutes Femi Azeez unleashed a shot from just outside the box that would not have looked out of place in the Premier League. The ferocity of the strike left Wigan 'keeper Tickle rooted to the spot as the net bulged behind him. It was a brilliant strike and set Reading on their way to a convincing home victory as their current run of good form continued. Smith tucked away his fifth goal of the season just after half time to extend Reading's lead which Wigan never really threatened. If anything they were very much on the front foot in the second half and might have added a third. Reading struggled to find their rhythm early in the game. Sloppy passing and a lack of movement allowed Wigan to dominate possession, although apart from a couple of goalmouth scrambles, only managed to create one decent chance. Wyke got on the end of cross but mistimed his leap and headed tamely wide.

15/12/2023 - A huge contingent of travelling fans helped to generate an atmosphere under the floodlights reminiscent of happier times for the Royals. It has been over twenty years since these two club have faced each other in the league and the outcome was significant for Reading in many ways. Not only did they earn a valuable point against a top six side with aspirations of promotion, they had to come from behind to achieve it. Too often this season Reading have wilted after falling behind, often after taking the lead. Neither did they concede when pinned in their own half by United later in the game. This evening we saw a side to Reading which has not been evident this season.

30/11/2023 - On-loan Southampton striker Dom Ballard is set to miss the rest of the season after picking up a major knee injury in Reading's 2-1 away win at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday. Ballard was forced to leave the pitch just before the half hour mark with the game goalless.
Ballard was brought to Reading on-loan after playing under Ruben Selles at Southampton and looks to be a strong prospect at just 18 years old. Ballard has played 12 times in all competitions for the Royals this season scoring five times. Collapse

06/11/2023 - Reading have been drawn away to Eastleigh in the second round of the FA Cup. Despite a second half red card, National League Eastleigh thrashed league rivals Boreham Wood 5-1 this weekend to progress to round two. The tier five club are currently midtable but will certainly fancy their chances when they take on Reading at home on the weekend of the 2nd December. Meanwhile Reading, sitting bottom of the League One table, have actually had good cup form this season with big wins in the EFL Trophy and now an FA Cup victory after Saturday's 3-2 home win over Milton Keynes at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. Reading will expect to get a ticket allocation of approximately 600 for the tie, which is certain to instantly sell out to season ticket holders. Collapse

21/02/2024 - Relentless second half pressure finally delivered the goals Reading required to bounce back from a heavy away defeat at league leaders Portsmouth on Saturday to overcome a stubborn Vale side desperate for points under new manager Darren Moore. The only change from the weekend starting eleven was the introduction of Smith to replace Mukairu. After a dull opening forty-five minutes Lewis Wing finally broke the deadlock fourteen minutes from the end with another stunning strike from outside the box. A headed clearance from a Savage corner dropped to Wing who took a touch before drilling a ferocious shot past Vale 'keeper Ripley.

01/02/2024 - Caylan Vickers has completed his move to Premier League club Brighton and Hove Albion. Like others that have left for presumably very little value, Vickers is an Academy product who has been in Reading's youth system for ten years. Vickers also moves for an undisclosed fee - likely to be a huge bargain for his new club but also vital money for Reading Football Club to enable them to pay remaining staff.
Vickers made his Reading debut at the start of the season, coming off the bench as Reading's lost 0-1 at home to Peterborough. In all competitions he has gone on to make 22 appearances, scoring three goals, including a late league winner against Bolton Wanderers in September. Vickers has attracted plenty of rumours through the season, but it is Brighton who have managed to agree a contract with a player who surely has a huge career ahead of him. Let's home we at least negotiated a good sell on clause.

29/01/2024 - It was bound to be difficult to replicate the level of performance achieved against top six Derby on Tuesday night. I suppose hard-fought draw against Orient side, also on a good run of results, was always on the cards. This was the kind of game Reading were losing earlier in ethe season.

15/01/2024 - Today was a very sad day for Reading Football Club. Thousands of fans arrived at the
Select Car Leasing Stadium expecting to see their team continue their battle to remain in
League One and enjoy the current run of good form in the league. It was an afternoon which ended in
disappointment and anger and frustration for many.
Only sixteen minutes of football was played. In that time play was held up twice to clear a
furry of tennis balls hurled on to the pitch from the South Stand. Vale had the ball in the net
from a free kick whipped in from the left after six minutes. Having looked away immediately
to observe the reaction of the celebrating Vale fans and record the details of the 'goal' and
tennis ball protest I had not observed the re-start of play. I was somewhat surprised later to
find out the 'goal' had been disallowed!

22/12/2023 - The threat of further points deductions have faded after the EFL turned their attention to Reading owner Dai Yongge rather than the club as a whole. Dai Yongge has been fined 20,000 pounds for failing to cover staff wages, with a further 50,000 pound fine to follow in January if he fails to pay the money into an allocated account. However the recommendation that he is banned from all football activity for 12 months will not be enforced, leaving him in control of the club on an on-going basis. There is no immediate end in sight to Dai Yongge's control of Reading Footbal Club.
The EFL believe that Dai Yongge's dodging of payments to cover salaries is "deliberate misconduct", which confirms he continues to drag the club down with no benefit to either himself or the club. His bizarre behaviour has left the EFL to concentrate on penalising Reading's owner rather than the club directly. The statement included "some re-assurance to the management, staff, and players at the club, who Collapse

12/12/2023 - It was like 'Groundhog Day' at the SCL Stadium again last night. 06/11/2023 - Reading made an excellent start to this FA cup tie. A superbly weighted Wing pass sliced open the MK Dons defence in the third minute and Ehibhatiomhan's well-timed run put him in possession. The young striker still had a lot to do but his first touch took him inside the last defender before beating 'keeper Kelly at the near post with a crisp finish. In spite of taking an early lead through well taken goal, Reading failed to take control of the game largely due to the impact of Ruben Selles' policy of using cup competitions to rest key players and give his talented youngsters the opportunity to gain first team experience.

7 DAYS AGO - The consensus on the concourse in the West Upper at half time was that this was the worst Reading performance this season so far, and it was hard to disagree with that assessment. However, it would be unfair to Wycombe to claim their half time lead could be attributed entirely to the poor quality of Reading's play.
Wycombe's game plan worked a treat in the first half. High pressing Wanderers prevented Reading from passing their way out of their own half, forcing them to resort to hitting long balls into their opponent's half. With their towering centre backs Lonwijk and Tafazolli winning everything in the air against the isolated Smith, the visitors kept Reading pinned in their own half for most of the opening forty-five minutes. Not only were Wycombe keeping Reading in their own half they were quick to snaffle up any loose balls in midfield. Reading gave the ball away with alarming regularity, and then conceded free kicks in clumsy attempts to win it back.

24/01/2024 - This was an outstanding performance against a top six side on good form. 02/01/2024 - Femi Azeez's superb strike after seventy-seven minutes lifted the Royals out of the bottom four for the first time since September. It was goal worthy of winning a tight game in which Reading again demonstrated their new found resilience and self-belief. After taking an early lead through Knibbs, a poor clearance was punished by City with an excellent strike by Jules from the edge of the box to restore parity. The lead was restored in first half stoppage time with Hartidge own goal. Reading relinquished the lead for a second time when Rankine poked home from close range taking advantage of some hesitant defending. Both sides clearly fancied their chances of taking three points but, as in recent games, Reading found a bit of extra quality in front of goal, once again delivered by an in-form Azeez.

22/12/2023 - It has finally been confirmed that the long awaited return of midfielder Ovie Ejaria will no longer happen after his contract with Reading FC was terminated by mutual consent. Ejaria was the last big earner at the club after being signed for 3.5 million pounds from Liverpool in August 2020. His departure means Reading's current first team has attracted no transfer fees. Ejaria hugely impressed on loan on his first arrival in January 2019, which led to a loan extension and then a permanent signing. His form then dipped before he was dropped from the team amid rumours of unknown injuries, making just 8 appearances for the Royals last season and failing to get involved in League One. Ejaria was due to leave in the summer anyway, but the early end to his contract is expected to save the club some money and leave Ejaria free to re-start his career at another club. Collapse
